Hi! I'm Rikki, the recycling raccoon, spokesracoon for the Madison County Recycling Program. My message is simple: "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink." Reduce means "don't make garbage in the first place." When you take a milk carton in the cafeteria, don't take a straw. Drink your milk right from the carton. The straw isn't used so it doesn't get thrown away. That makes less garbage. After you eat your lunch on a plastic cafeteria tray, it is washed in a dishwasher and used again. That is called "Reuse." Recycling is one of the easiest and best things we can do for Planet Earth. When you put an aluminum can in your blue bin at curbside or in one of the County's drop off stations, it gets melted down and becomes a new can. No new raw materials are needed. That's called Recycling." By recycling and then buying recycled products from home, school and play, we can really make a difference. "Rethink" means to look at various products before you buy them." Try to buy products that are made of recycled content. Look for the three chasing arrows.
Included in this section of the website are puzzles, games and lots of things you can do to learn about "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink." You can even take a tour of a landfill and see what happens to your garbage. Your can visit a MRF (rhymes with smurf) and see what happens to the cans and bottles and things you recycle in you blue bin at home or the big blue drop-off centers located all over the County.
